Empathy

Reflection

Completing the Bereavement Across the Life Span assignment helped me grow in my understanding of how grief is experienced differently across developmental stages. I learned that effective counseling requires more than simply recognizing that a client is grieving; counselors must consider the client’s developmental level, family relationships, culture, spirituality, and individual understanding of death. As a counselor-in-training, this assignment strengthened my ability to recognize that children, adolescents, adults, and older adults may express grief in very different ways.

This assignment also increased my awareness of the importance of culturally and spiritually responsive counseling. Incorporating Christian principles into the vignettes helped me recognize that spirituality can be an important source of meaning, hope, and resilience for clients who identify with a faith tradition. At the same time, I learned that counselors must avoid imposing their own spiritual beliefs and should allow clients to determine whether and how spirituality is incorporated into counseling. This experience strengthened my commitment to providing an accepting and ethical environment where clients can process loss according to their own beliefs, values, and cultural experiences.
